On carpet, use slow, repetitive front-to-back motions in an overlapping sequence. A quick once over doesn’t do much. On the other hand, don’t press down or make too many passes over the same spot. Instead, move slightly to the left or right about every four strokes.
To get the most out of your vacuuming regime, remember these few easy tips:
When vacuuming, don’t ignore those corners and crevices where dust builds.

“Top-down” cleaning saves you the step of vacuuming again after dusting. Dust blinds, windowsills, and furniture surfaces first and then vacuum away any fallen dust.

Remember to remove and replace or empty vacuum bags when they are half to two-thirds full.

If you have read a carpet ad, looked at a TV carpet commercial, or browsed in a carpet store during the past year, you are certainly aware that “stain resistant” is the big new feature in carpeting these days.

Stain resistance is great. Today, individual carpet fibers are manufactured in an all-new way, manufactured so that any acid-based stain cannot get into the fibers and leave a permanent spot. This means that pet stains, Kool-Aid, coffee and even red wine are no longer the menaces they used to be. Of course, you still have to clean up the spill, the sooner you wipe it up the better, because any substance on top of the carpet is quick to attract dirt, dust, and other particles from shoes and the air.

Just in case you haven’t realized it, the new anti-stain manufacturing process concerns only stains with an acid base. All the rest are still there to plague you: oils, paints, chocolate, nail polish, sticky jams and jellies, gum and just good old dirty feet.
Even if your carpet is “Stain Resistant”, “Stain Master”, “Stain
Blocker”, or any of the other new anti-stain names, day-to-day care is still necessary, Vacuum the heavy use areas daily and give the whole carpet a good vacuuming once a week. You still must act quickly on any spill, but you can rest easier knowing that the acid-based offenders mentioned above will no longer ruin your carpet.

It s a good idea to have your carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year (or more if your carpets get hard use). This will insure that your big investment in lovely carpeting will last you a long, long time.

Is it hard to care for? There is a special beauty about velvet. It was once considered a fragile and delicate fabric, but today’s lovely velvets are meant to be used, to be enjoyed!
The main thing to remember about velvet is that it is a weave and not a special type of delicate fiber. Velvets are now made from cotton and almost every synthetic fiber available: nylon, polyester, acrylic and even herculon. They are warm and luxurious like their predecessors, but far easier to clean and some are virtually immune to stains.
What to do. If someone spills something on your velvet sofa, get it up as rapidly as possible by blotting (never rubbing!). Then follow by sponging with a mild detergent solution, one that’s made for fine fabrics. Blot with more dry towels; again, don’t rub! When almost dry, gently wipe in the direction of the velvet’s nap-lay. When completely dry, go over carefully with a clean, soft brush.
Vacuum your velvet covered furniture at least monthly. Velvet piles collect dust and abrasive soil particles just like your drapes and carpets.
Have your velvets professionally cleaned. This is generally not a job for the “do-it-yourselfer.” You do not have the proper equipment to avoid nap distortion and the use of a professional velvet finishing brush is imperative. Particularly avoid putting any moisture on crushed velvet. You could completely ruin it. Call a professional.

You’ve just stepped out of bed onto a cold, soggy carpet. You hear water running somewhere. You feel panicky. What should you do?

First find out what’s causing the overflow. It could be a burst pipe, a washing machine hose has cracked open, the toilet is overflowing, or maybe someone left a faucet running and the sink is stopped up. Household flooding isn’t always caused by the river bursting its banks, or vandals turning the hose into your bedroom. You can have a dandy flood from just one everyday accident.

Move quickly. Once you determine the cause see if you can’t do something to stop it. Know where to turn off the main water valve. Go do it. Then get your furniture up off the floor before it stains the carpet.
Call for help immediately. You may need a plumber too.

Help is at hand. When you call us we’ll tell you quickly what to do first and how you can help save your belongings. Then, with address and directions in hand, our trained specialists will be on their way with professional restoration equipment. Usually your homeowner’s policy will cover most of the costs involved.
Serving North Denver, CO. See our website for more information.

Somehow draperies seem to be the forgotten stepsisters of the home decor world. But they need every bit as much attention as your upholstered pieces and your carpet if you want to keep your home looking its very best.
Drapery fabrics are subject to the same soil filtering action as carpets. They collect dust, lint and pollen as well as oily vapors and acidic atmospheric pollution. Insects love to make their cocoons in the folds of draperies… particularly in the pleats or end folds. Draperies should be thoroughly vacuumed at least every six weeks.
Your drapes will last twice as long if you maintain a regular cleaning program..
Cleaning draperies is not a do-it-yourself project. Many require dry cleaning solvents that must be used under controlled conditions. Finishing techniques are acquired only by professional training.
